“Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting,
drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, or reportage, no matter
how well or badly - not to get money and fame but to experience becoming, to
find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow. Start right now and do it
for the rest of your lives. You will find that you have learned a lot more
about what’s inside you and you will have made your soul grow.”
The good news about this is that it's never too late to
start. But don't miss the key to the whole thing. It's not about skill or the
quality of the final product. It's about giving your soul the chance to grow
that the arts uniquely provide."
Shortly before his death in 2007, Kurt Vonnegut received a letter from a class of students.
The above quote is the advice he offered.
