Our haircuts

My husband calls them 'lids' or you might know them as hairstyles. He lives with four women (six if you count our doxie, Lily and g-pig, Buttercup), so he's pretty familiar with the ups and downs of women and their hair. His reference to our 'lids' is often a non-confrontational way of encouraging us when we've experienced bad hair days back-to-back-to-back. He's good about weighing in his opinion, only when asked, with fear and trepidation.

When our girls were young, we chose to have their hair cut short and styled the same. To this day, we have friends who remember their younger days with 'bows' and Dorthy Hamill haircuts. I think around the age of six, we gave them the choice of how they wanted to fix their hair. In this picture, you'll see that Tessa and Madeline are in the 'growing out stage' yet Clara Taylor is still a Dorthy Hamill girl.

My hair style, on the other hand, has stayed relatively the same for as long as I can remember. I often contemplate doing something different: layers? shorter? bangs? but always chicken out at the last minute. Even my hair color has changed on its own over the years. I am a natural born redhead. But after three pregnancies, my color has naturally faded to dark brown with highlights. It saddens me I'm no longer a redhead.

Change is good and maybe someday I'll take the plunge and go short and straight, but for the time being I'm happy with my 'lid.' What about you? How many different hairstyles have you had? Are you happy with your current 'lid'?

Maybe we could borrow a style from the most popular haircuts of the 20th century...
  • 1930s: Jean Harlow's sikly, shoulder dusting waves
  • 1940s: Ingrid Bergman's cropped bob-and-bang
  • 1950s: Brigitte Bardot's soft, side swept bangs
  • 1960s: Twiggy's iconic pixie cut
  • 1970s: Farrah Fawcett's long, feathered mane
  • 1980s: Madonna's Desperately Seeking Susan perm
  • 1990s: Jennifer Aniston's face-framing Friends shag. --Susan Smith (Which is your favorite?)
