Thoughts on intercessory prayer...

Virtually all prayer fueled by the Holy Spirit has two objectives:
  • the desire for God to make Himself known through Christ, and
  • the desire for people to turn to Him.
When interceding for another, consider praying in a way that would point your requests toward these twin goals.

An example...

this morning, I am praying for Tessa's safety motoring (too fast) around the city, her interaction with co-workers, and later tonight going out on a date with Connor.   When I pray for her, do I simply want safety for her physical well-being?  Or do I want Christ to be revealed to her in a way that will draw her closer to Him?

And...

when I pray for a colleague who is struggling in a relationship, and I pray for their escape from frustration, anger, and disappointment, am I really asking God to make Himself known and to draw my friend into deeper intimacy with Christ?

FOOD for thought.

Praying scripture this morning...

"But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives,
he will produce this kind of fruit in us:
love,
joy,
peace,
patience,
kindness,
goodness,
faithfulness,
gentleness,
and self-control.

Here there is not conflict with the law."

"So make every effort to apply the benefits of these promises to your life.  Then your faith will produce a life of moral excellence.
A life of moral excellence leads to knowing God better.
Knowing God better leads to self-control.
Self-control leads to patient endurance, and
patient endurance leads to godliness.
Godliness leads to love for other Christians, and
finally you will grow to have LOVE for everyone."

Galatians 5:22,23 & 2 Peter 1:5-7

Lord,

Give me an EXTERIOR and INTERIOR gaze heavenward today and help me to
keep my focus off obstacles that seem to surround me.

God with us...

Jesus told Philip that he came not just to tell us what God is like but to show us what God is like (John 14:8,9).  Jesus came in order to embody goodness and fullness of life.  Knowing us, God knows that we are sensory humans and need to see, to feel, and to touch.  Christ left behind equality with God to live among us.

God says...

 'I am with you'

Linking scripture for prayer...

As a deer pants for streams of water so I long for you, O God.
I thirst for God, the Living God.

When can I come and stand before him?
We grow weary in our present bodies and we long for the day
when we will put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.

Once you were not a people,
now you are the people of God.
Once you received none of God's mercy,
now you have received His mercy.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus
on whom our faith depends from start to finish.
He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross
because of the joy he knew would be afterward.
Now He is seated in the place of highest honor
beside God's throne in heaven.

(Psalm 42:1,2 - 2 Corinthians 5:2 - 1 Peter 2:10 - Hebrews 12:2)
How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!  It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes.  It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion.  For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.
-Psalm 133

Lord,

It's obvious, that where there's unityyou bestow your presence and blessing.  It's equally obvious that where there's disunity, Satan bestows his darkness and evil.

Boldly and shamelessly, I ask you for an even greater outpouring of the Spirit of unity...not uniformity, but "the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace," (Ephesians 4).  Drench us with the humbling and unifying dew of the gospel.  We want to be sopping wet, not merely damp.  Saturate and satiate us with the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

We don't look to Aaron and his beard, but to you, Jesus, and your enthronement at the right hand of the Father.  You are our great High Priest who has received the Spirit without measure, so you can deploy Him without reservation.

Continue to heal us...reconcile us...and deploy us into your ripened harvest and broken creation together.

amen.

On becoming a woman of prayer...

Several years ago a friend gave me the book Creating a Life with God by Daniel Wolpert.  I have read it from cover to cover.  Most of the pages are highlighted and many dog-eared.  The book is filled with simple and understandable approaches to prayer practices that have deepen my life with God.

Prayer is a conversation with God that begins in communing with Him and leads to life transformation.  Many people start with the understanding that prayer is nothing more than speaking formulas or appealing to God for help.  Prayer is something much more rich and profound.  Prayer must be your life with God : an awareness and consciousness of God that sweeps you off your feet.  In prayer, your whole existence is transformed as you begin to seek God in all that you do.  Your daily routine is no longer compartmentalized as "daily devotions" and praying before meals.

For me, the tipping point came in chapter 11 - Prayer and Life in the World.  Wolpert writes, "...the hallmark of all our prayer practices is that in some manner they put us at God's disposal.  God is in charge, not us."  For me that means

I am there to listen and to notice God's presence;
I am not there to have God do my bidding.

Wolpert continues,
"Prayer is difficult.
It is not the techniques that are hard -- most of the techniques are amusingly easy. Rather the difficulty lies in following through on the commitment to pray in the face of distractions that bear down on us or pick at us like annoying bugs, driving us away from the presence of God."
FEAR knocked.      FAITH answered.

NO ONE was there.
"Lord,

...speak to me, please.

I can't go on like this.  Speak to me in a way I can understand clearly.  I've read your Word, I've sought your counsel, I've whined, I've groveled, I've despaired, I've plead ---I've waited.  And through it all, Lord, You've been so strangely silent."

I feel definant and justified as I mumble my prayer.  Stubbornly I fold my arms like a child and say to the Lord - 'I will not let you go until you bless me.'  Instantaneously, I hear His still quiet voice whisper to me.

'STOP seeking what you want to hear and listen to what I have to tell you.'

...and I reply, yes Lord.

"Heavenly Father,

Giver of life and health, comfort and hope;

Please visit us with such a strong sense of your Presence that we may trust faithfully in your mighty strength and power, in your wisdom vastly beyond our understanding, and in your love which surrounds us for all eternity.

At this time, we ask for Your grace especially upon this group of women, that we may know your gift of hearts made joyous and strong by faith."

Pray...

I am certainly not an authority on prayer.  I simply pray. As you do.

As I have grown older (especially through the last six years) though, and as the friendship between the Lord and me has deepened, I've come to feel that perhaps my most meaningful prayer times are wordless.

"...for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him..."

All I intend to say, is that between two friends the communication is many times inwardly.  My wordless prayers don't seem to have a particular 'prayer technique' in mind, but an open heart.

So, words or no words --- my intent is foremost to converse with my Lord.

In my heart, I ask Him to do this or that.  He also asks me.

"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words."  Matthew 6:6-7

A Prayer About Palms Up Care-Casting

Casting all your care on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Dear Father,

I woke up much earlier than usual today, and it didn’t take coffee to get me going. I’ve got a lot on my mind, and even more stirring in my heart. In the chaos, it’s incredibly comforting to lay claim to the riches of this verse and to be certain of your care. Assurance of your care is always good news to me, but especially this morning. The combination of what I’ve taken on plus the burdens that have been laid at my feet are way too much for me to carry. I need your big heart and broad shoulders.

By faith… right now… with palms up, I cast my cares upon you, gracious Father. Carry my burdens for the people I love—dear friends I so wish I could change. The domino effect of their destructive choices is affecting many others.

Sometimes I foolishly think if you’d only let me be the 4th member of the Trinity for 15 minutes I could do a lot of good in the lives of a lot of people. What arrogance. You haven’t called us to fix anyone, but to love them as Jesus loves us. To cast our cares on you isn’t to shirk our responsibilities, but it is to remember that you are God and we are so very not.

Receive my concerns about living in a world with a broken economy—one in which good friends lose jobs, neighbors lose homes, children grow fears, and life gets painfully disrupted.

Take the heavy load I feel for fellow pastors who are in the crazy-making turmoil of life in the local church. At times it seems like the only solution would be for you to send revival or send Jesus back, either of which would be welcomed. But at least bring the gospel to bear with fresh power where my friends serve. Humble the proud… soften the hard… quiet the tongues… grant gospel-sanity once again.

I cannot add one minute to my life through worry. In fact, I can take a lot away from my life through trying to carry burdens you alone can carry. Turn my “What if’s?” into “Now that’s”… Now that Jesus has risen and is enthroned, everything has changed.

You’ve numbered my hairs and my days. You have the hearts of every king in your hand. Nothing catches you off-guard or by surprise. There are no wrinkles in your brow or second-guessing in your courts. You give and you take away, blessed be your name, O, Lord.

Whenever I am tempted to doubt your burden bearing care, may Jesus’ cross loom large in my gaze. For it was there, Father, you bore the greatest of all my burdens… my sin, and you demonstrated the incomparable extent of your care. So very Amen, I pray with palms up, in Jesus’ matchless and merciful name.

Sending her off to college

There is a moment.
Unlike all others when my heart shudders at the mere thought.
Away.

Time now moves in slow motion and I'm moving and thinking at the same speed.
Memories are slipping through the frames of my mind

MOTHERHOOD ~ 101

Will I be able to walk away from her?  Let her go...today?
Oh, my chest tightens and the tears spill when I think of what changes will come to me today...as

SHE LEAVES...our home.

I don't want this moment to come ~ I've thought it through, but logically it seemed best.  Now my heart aches.

Bittersweet.

O Lord, bring me back to you...

Life's difficult questions

CNN reporter Sara Sidner sits in a car surrounded by children as she and a crew
prepare to leave the flooded Sindh Province in Pakistan
Sindh Province, Pakistan

The first things you notice are the flies. They form what looks like a buzzing black crust on children's lips, eyes and foreheads. The children are either too tired to keep brushing them away or too used to them to bother.

"We have terrible problem with flies," 50-year-old Khuda Jatoi says in Sindhi, the local language here. Everyone here is suffering from something. Still, the moment they see us, everyone scrambles to find a suitable place for us. Someone is trying to find a chair for us to sit down. Father Khuda Joti is insisting on giving us tea or sending someone to buy a cold drink. We are guests in his makeshift shelter, and he wants to give us the best of what he has. We cannot bring ourselves to take anything from him. He and his family have lost nearly everything they own.

They are victims of the worst floods Pakistan has ever seen, and yet they are trying to make us comfortable. That keeps happening everywhere we go. The day before, in a school-turned-clinic, a few ladies who had survived the floods handed me a "hair catcher" because they could see that I was sweating profusely, and they wanted to make me more comfortable. At the same time, the men kept fanning us with brightly colored hand fans. It makes me feel both ashamed about how much I have and don't appreciate, and inspired by the kindness that is clearly being extended with no expectation of anything in return.

When we ask about their troubles, the entire clan begins to talk at once. Suddenly we are surrounded by children, women, fathers, uncles, aunts, cousins and grandfathers - all members of the large extended family. They have taken refuge in a small school that the family broke into and turned into an unofficial shelter. They have nowhere else to go.

"We were drowning in the water," one family member says. We couldn't hear much else as the sound of all those voices began to weave together in a suffocating quilt made of despair.

We tried to quiet everyone so that we could have a conversation. They told us their sorrows and spewed anger at authorities for giving too little too late.

Then, something happened that makes me cringe. One of the women in the crowd asked that I take the tiny baby girl I was cooing at. She said the baby would have a better life with me. I wasn't sure I heard her correctly until the actual mother of the baby girl said it. I stood there silent, my brain churning so furiously it was as if it was looking for the right answer to a test from the Almighty. How am I supposed to answer that question? What is the right answer? Is there a right answer?

There have been plenty of days in my line of work where I imagined gathering up all the suffering children and taking them with me - at least I would know that they would have food to eat and books to read. But I never really considered actually taking a baby from the arms of its mother, even if asked. In this case, the family has been so traumatized, I told myself it was just their fear and anxiety talking.

I left with only my notepad and camera in my hand and another of life's difficult questions swirling in my head.

A Simple Prayer

I am, O God, a jumbled mass of motives.

One moment I am adoring you, and the next I am shaking my fist at you.

I vacillate between mounting hope, and deepening despair.

I am full of faith, and full of doubt.

I want the best for others, and am jealous when they get it.

Even so, God, I will not run from your presence.  Nor will I pretend to be what I am not.  Thank you for accepting me with all my contradictions.

Amen.

O God of such truth as sweeps away all lies
grace as shrivels all excuses,
come now to find us
for we have lost ourselves
in a shuffle of disguises
and in the rattle of empty words.

Let your Spirit move mercifully
to recreate us from
the chaos of our lives.

We have been careless
of our days
our loves
our gifts
our chances...

Our prayer is to change, O God,
not out of despair of self
but for love of you,
and the selves we long to become
before we simply waste away.

Let your mercy move in and through us now...
Amen.

Morning Prayers

Let me stand to-day...

for whatever is pure and true and just and good;
for the redemption of daily business from the blight of self-seeking;
for the right of the weak and oppressed;
for the recognition of new workings of Thy Spirit in the minds of the men of my time;
for the hope of yet more glorious days to come.

To-day Lord...
let me put right before interest;
let me put others before self;
let me put the things of the spirit before the things of the body;
let me put the attainment of noble ends above the enjoyment of present pleasures; let me put priniciple above reputation;
let me put Thee before all else.

O Thou the reflection of whose transcendent glory did once appear unbroken in the face of Jesus Christ,
give me to-day a heart like His~
a brave heart,
a true heart,
a heart with great room in it,
a heart fixed on Thyself;
for His name's sake.

Amen.

My small church

I love the challenge that God gives me each Monday evening ~ to take women a ‘step deeper’ and as Brennan Manning states,

‘…there is more power in sharing our weaknesses, than in sharing our strengths.’

This year, as I have been in the past, God is challenging me to pray for my ‘small church’. He is calling me to be a spiritual leader in their lives. Someone who challenges, encourages, and stretches them into what Ephesians describes as “mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit.”

My group has blended together in such a beautiful way. To think that less than three months ago ~ most had not even met each other~ and now they are being knit together by God’s own Spirit. I am continually trying to put my heart and mind around “HOW” I should pray for them.

Several mornings ago I started out with

~bless our fellowship and bond each of these women together~

I stopped. How one sided and flat was that for a small group leader with her own ‘small church’? I remembered a passage I had been reading earlier in the week in Ephesians. Take a moment and read Paul’s words in Ephesians 3:14-19.

"When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through
his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes
from God."

I found that Paul had already placed his finger on the heartbeat of my small group. He eloquently describes how I need to pray for each of my women. This is the prayer God has laid on my heart for each of YOU my ‘small church’.

In my reading and prayer times this morning ~

Teach me, O God, so to use all the circumstances of my life to-day that they may bring forth in me the fruits of holiness rather than the fruits of sin.

Let me use disappointment as material for patience;

Let me use success as material for thankfulness;

Let me use suspense as material for perseverance;

Let me use danger as material for courage;

Let me use reproach as material for longsuffering;

Let me use praise as material for humility;

Let me use pleasures as material for temperance;

Let me use pains as material for endurance.

Holy God, I would remember before Thee all my friends and those of my own household ~ especially ... and ..., beseeching Thee that in Thy great love all Thou wouldst keep them also free from sin, controlling all their deeds this day in accordance with Thy most perfect will. Amen.
Taken from A Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie

My Lord God,I have no idea where I am going.

I do not see the road ahead of me.

I cannot know for certain where it will end.

Nor do I really know myself,

And the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.

And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.

I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.

And I know that if I do this,

you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.

I will not fear, for you are ever with me,

And you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
