Perhaps the hardest thing about following Christ is translating our good intentions into daily deeds. Christ calls us, and we yearn to answer him, but time and again we lose resolve. Is discipleship possible amid the stresses of this earthly life? Do we anticipate the changes Christ will bring about in our lives in becoming His disciple? How can we be centered on him, when everything seems to pull us apart?

Here is an excerpt from Discipleship: Living for Christ in the Daily Grind

"Are we ready to let Christ's Word cut deeply into us, or will we repeatedly protect and harden ourselves against it? We do not realize how often we stand in God's way. But we can ask him to cut us with his Word, even if it hurts."

I picked this book up today at a used book shop. I've quickly browsed through the foreword (written by Henri Nouwen), introduction, and first chapter. The publisher suggests Discipleship is best read and studied in a group context. "It is one thing to read a book, it is another to be held accountable with what you have come to know." How true I have found that to be. Hearing God speak is one thing, doing what he's nudging me to do...is another.

What does the title suggest to you?
How do we ask him to 'cut us with his Word, even if it hurts?"
What does that look like?
Have you experienced this deep unspeakable pain of God's scalpel?
