In Centering Prayer we rely totally on the grace of God and adopt a stance of receptivity. We don't concentrate, focus on, or hold a certain thought - we simply let go of any effort and consent* to God's presense and action. All else is the work of the Divine - we simply open ourselves to receive.
We sit.
We wait.
We surrender to God's action.
We don't try to accomplish anything.
We discard expectations of certain feelings or emotions.
We exercise a minimum of human effort.
*to express consent - because God honors our freedom to refuse or be receptive.
