John of the Cross

Reading this morning on John of the Cross' dark night of the soul experiences.  During the 'dark' times, we must remember God will see us through.  We need to wait, as the Psalmist reminds us...

Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.
Psalm 24:17

For in those dark days, God is at work in the depths of our souls transforming us.

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
Romans 6:4

John of the Cross reminds us to...

  • Release greedy desires and the attachment to pleasurres of the senses.
  • Purge feelings of self-interest and a self-seeking desire.
  • Ache for God in the darkness - long for Him.
  • God will act through the powerlessness of our efforts.
