the goodness of affliction

'Since all people are 'born to trouble as the sparks fly upward' (Job 5:7), we should all expect to meet with trials and afflicitons.  In fact, we should be preparing to meet them.  From the first hour in which an affliction seizes us we must recognize the hand of God in it.  We can't let your vision be obscured by the immediate cause of our troubles.'

Philip Doddridge (1702-1751)
